Coquitlam’s Burke Mountain neighbourhood is set to welcome an exciting new addition that will change the face of outdoor recreation in the area. After years of planning and anticipation, the city has officially approved the final design for the Burke Mountain Athletic Park, with construction scheduled to begin this July and wrap up by summer 2026.
What’s Coming to Burke Mountain?
Located around the 3400-block of David Avenue, this 8.9-acre public park will feature top-tier sports amenities designed to serve both local residents and future school facilities on-site. Here’s what’s planned:
- Artificial Turf Field: Fully lit with LED lighting and lined for soccer, field hockey, and field lacrosse.
- 400-Metre Rubberized Running Track: Includes a six-lane oval with an eight-lane 100-metre straightaway.
- Four Full-Sized Tennis Courts: Located at the northwest end of the park.
- Players’ shelters, warm-up areas, and upper/lower viewing areas to accommodate spectators and teams.
The park is part of a larger 23-acre property co-owned with School District 43, which is planning a high school, middle school, and natural grass field on the site. A shared parking lot with 60 public-use stalls will also be available outside of school hours.

Why It Matters for Burke Mountain Residents
As one of Coquitlam’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods, Burke Mountain has long needed enhanced recreation infrastructure. This athletic park meets that demand and more, offering a modern and inclusive space for families, athletes, and schools to use throughout the year.
According to local sources, the city’s share of the earthworks phase cost $19.3 million, and ongoing operations and asset replacement will total approximately $750,000 per year—representing a modest 0.33% tax increase.
City Council Support & Community Impact
Coquitlam council approved the project unanimously “and with enthusiasm,” according to Mayor Richard Stewart. Coun. Dennis Marsden praised the high standards expected of the park, calling it likely “the most impressive looking artificial turf field in the city.”
The addition also strengthens the area’s appeal for homebuyers seeking modern infrastructure, community spaces, and educational amenities—an important point for families considering a move to Burke Mountain or nearby neighbourhoods like Smiling Creek, Upper Hyde Creek, or Burke Village Promenade.
Looking Ahead
Once completed, Burke Mountain Athletic Park will not only offer vital recreational space, but also signal a broader shift in how Coquitlam develops integrated, multi-use public facilities that serve both schools and the wider community.
It’s an exciting time for Burke Mountain—and if you’re considering moving to this vibrant part of northeast Coquitlam, this park might be the extra reason you need to call it home.
