Coquitlam’s City-Wide Garage Sale Is Back This May — Here’s What You Need to Know

April 7, 2026

If you love a good deal or you’ve got a garage full of things that need a new home, you’re going to want to mark May 16 and 17 on your calendar. Coquitlam’s City-Wide Garage Sale and Giveaway Event is one of those community traditions that brings the whole city together in a genuinely fun and useful way. Neighbours meet neighbours, bargain hunters find treasures, and stuff that would otherwise end up in a landfill gets a second life instead.

It’s a city-organized event that happens twice a year, and the spring edition is always a big one. Whether you’re looking to declutter before a move, pick up some garden tools on the cheap, or just spend a Saturday wandering your neighbourhood with a coffee in hand, this event is worth your time. Coquitlam is already a pretty great place to put down roots, and events like this are a big part of why. If you’re curious about the community you’d be buying into, check out our Coquitlam homes for sale to get a feel for what’s available.

Exploring Coquitlam: A Great Place to Live

Coquitlam has grown a lot over the past decade, but it’s held onto the kind of community feel that makes people want to stay. It’s a city where you’ve got access to big-city amenities without feeling like you’re living on top of everyone else. Lafarge Lake and Town Centre Park are right in the heart of things, and they host events throughout the year that give the area a real neighbourhood energy.

The City-Wide Garage Sale is a perfect example of what makes Coquitlam tick. It’s a grassroots, community-first initiative that also happens to be good for the environment. The city actively supports waste reduction, and this event is one of the more visible ways that plays out. It’s also just a nice excuse to get outside and meet the people who live around you, which is something more cities should encourage.

What Makes Coquitlam a Great Place to Live?

  • Schools: Coquitlam is served by School District 43, one of the larger and well-resourced districts in BC. There are strong French immersion programs, specialty schools, and a good mix of elementary and secondary options across different neighbourhoods.
  • Parks: Town Centre Park, Lafarge Lake, Mundy Park, and the Coquitlam River trail system give residents plenty of green space, walking paths, and outdoor recreation without having to leave the city.
  • Transit: The Evergreen Extension SkyTrain runs right through Coquitlam, with stations at Coquitlam Central, Lincoln, and Lafarge Lake-Douglas. Getting into Vancouver or over to Burnaby is genuinely easy on transit.
  • Local Scene: Austin Avenue, the Coquitlam Centre area, and the broader Tri-Cities have a solid mix of local restaurants, shops, farmers markets, and community events like the garage sale that keep things interesting year-round.

FAQs About Buying in Coquitlam

What’s the housing market like in Coquitlam right now?
Coquitlam’s market has stayed active, particularly for condos and townhomes near SkyTrain stations. Detached homes are more limited in supply, which keeps prices relatively firm. It’s a market where being prepared and moving quickly on the right property still matters a lot.

How much does a home in Coquitlam typically cost?
It really depends on the property type. Condos can start in the mid $500s, townhomes often fall in the $800s to just over $1 million range, and detached homes vary widely by neighbourhood and lot size. Burke Mountain and Westwood Plateau tend to run higher, while areas closer to Coquitlam Central offer more entry-level options.

Are the schools in Coquitlam good?
Yes, School District 43 is well-regarded across BC. There are strong academic programs, French immersion streams, and a variety of secondary schools with different focuses. For families with kids, it’s one of the more appealing parts of choosing Coquitlam.

How is the commute from Coquitlam to Vancouver?
For transit riders, it’s very manageable. The Evergreen Extension SkyTrain connects to the Millennium Line, putting you at Waterfront or Commercial Drive without a transfer. Drive times vary, but having the SkyTrain option is a real quality-of-life advantage for buyers who work in Vancouver.

Is there much inventory available in Coquitlam right now?
Inventory has been tighter in recent years, especially for move-in-ready townhomes and well-located condos. New developments have added some supply, particularly on Burke Mountain and near Lincoln Station, but demand tends to absorb new listings fairly quickly. Working with a local agent who knows what’s coming is a real advantage in this market.
