Jug Island Trail Hike: A Quiet Coastal Escape Near Port Moody

April 28, 2026

Some hikes feel like an effort. Others feel like you just… slipped into something peaceful without trying too hard. The Jug Island Trail hike falls into that second category.

Tucked inside Belcarra Regional Park, just outside Port Moody, this trail is one of those spots locals know about but doesn’t always get the same attention as bigger hikes nearby. Which, honestly, is part of the appeal.

If you’re looking for something scenic, not overly difficult, and close to the Tri-Cities, this one checks a lot of boxes.

Where Is Jug Island Trail?

The trail starts near the Belcarra Picnic Area in Belcarra Regional Park, about a 20-minute drive from central Port Moody. You’ll park near the main lot, then follow signs for Jug Island.

It’s a pretty straightforward start. No confusing junctions right away, no scrambling. Just a wide, well-maintained forest trail easing you in.

Trail Stats at a Glance

  • Distance: ~5.5 km round trip
  • Elevation Gain: ~100–150 metres
  • Time: 1.5 to 2.5 hours
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate
  • Trail Type: Out and back

It’s not a grind. You’ll feel it a bit, especially on the return, but it’s manageable for most people with a basic fitness level.

What the Trail Feels Like

The first stretch winds through tall coastal forest. Think mossy ground, filtered sunlight, and that quiet you only get when you’re surrounded by trees.

Then the trail starts to open up slightly. You’ll catch glimpses of the water through the trees, which kind of builds anticipation without fully giving it away yet.

There’s something nice about that pacing. It doesn’t rush the view.

Gradual Elevation, Nothing Too Steep

The elevation gain is gentle. No brutal climbs, no technical sections. Just a steady incline that feels pretty forgiving.

Still, you’ll notice it more on the way back. It’s one of those trails where the return is just a little tougher than you remember.

The View at Jug Island

Eventually, the trail opens up to a lookout facing Jug Island itself. A small, forested island sitting quietly in the water, surrounded by calm inlet views.

It’s not dramatic in the “wow this is insane” sense. It’s quieter than that. More calm, more reflective.

And honestly, that’s kind of the point.

  • Wide ocean views across the inlet
  • Mountains layered in the background
  • Peaceful shoreline with places to sit

On a clear day, you can just hang out there for a while. No rush to leave.

Best Time to Go

Spring through early fall is ideal, but the trail is open year-round.

  • Spring: Fresh greenery, fewer crowds
  • Summer: Best weather, but busier
  • Fall: Quiet, slightly cooler, really nice colours
  • Winter: Still doable, just expect mud and damp sections

Weekday mornings are your best bet if you want it quieter. Weekends can get busy, especially in the summer.

What to Bring

You don’t need a ton of gear, but a few basics make the hike smoother:

  • Water (more than you think you need)
  • Comfortable hiking shoes
  • Light snacks
  • Jacket or layer (it cools down near the water)

It’s a short hike, but still. Being underprepared always feels worse than carrying an extra water bottle.

Insider Tips (That Make a Difference)

  • Start earlier in the day to avoid parking issues
  • Take your time at the viewpoint. It’s the best part
  • Watch for roots and uneven ground on the trail
  • Bring a camera or just use your phone. You’ll want a shot

Also, if you’re thinking about combining this with another short walk or beach stop in Belcarra, it’s worth it. Makes the whole trip feel more complete.

Why People Keep Coming Back

Some hikes are about pushing limits. This one isn’t.

The Jug Island Trail hike is more about getting outside, clearing your head, and just enjoying where you are. No pressure, no big expectations.

And honestly, that’s probably why it sticks with people.
